Ernakulam Medical College Keeps Functioning as Doctors Defy State-Wide Strike

On November 14, 2025, while government medical college hospitals across Kerala were affected by a strike staged by the Kerala Government Medical College Teachers Association (KGMCTA), the Government Medical College Hospital in Ernakulam continued to function partially. This was due to doctors who are part of the Cooperative Academy of Professional Education (CAPE) joining duty, as well as a few doctors from the Ernakulam unit of the KGMCTA ensuring that emergency services were not disrupted.
The outpatient departments (OPDs) at the Ernakulam medical college hospital were operational as usual, with over 200 patients visiting the general medicine and orthopedics OPDs. In total, 1,403 patients sought treatment in various OPDs on the strike day, with most of them unaware of the ongoing protest.
The Ernakulam unit of the KGMCTA, however, withdrew from all academic responsibilities as part of the state-wide strike. The unit president inaugurated the protest, and members carried placards and raised slogans in solidarity with the agitation. The students' union also joined the protest.
