Erleada Therapy Shows Ninefold Cancer Elimination Boost
31 May
Summary
- Erleada before surgery dramatically improves cancer elimination.
- Drug combination reduced cancer spread or death by 20%.
- Longer therapy doubled time before requiring subsequent treatment.

Johnson & Johnson's prostate cancer drug Erleada, combined with hormone-blocking therapy, has demonstrated a significant improvement in treating high-risk localized or locally advanced prostate cancer. Presented data indicates that this regimen, administered six months before and after prostate surgery, resulted in a ninefold higher likelihood of little to no detectable cancer at the time of surgery compared to hormone therapy alone.
Furthermore, the addition of Erleada reduced the risk of cancer spreading or death by 20%. For patients undergoing a full year of this combination therapy, the time before requiring subsequent treatment was nearly doubled, extending past six years. This extended treatment also lowered the risk of recurrence and death by 29%, addressing a critical need as nearly half of patients currently see their cancer return.
The drug, apalutamide, operates by inhibiting androgen receptor pathways that fuel prostate cancer growth. These findings, presented at the American Society of Clinical Oncology meeting in Chicago, are expected to shift treatment approaches for high-risk prostate cancer. Erleada received U.S. approval in 2018 and is currently used with testosterone-suppressing hormone therapy. Johnson & Johnson plans to seek global approval for this earlier-stage treatment. The safety profile of the Erleada combination aligns with previous studies, with common side effects including hot flushes, urinary incontinence, and erectile dysfunction. The trial involved over 2,000 patients considered candidates for prostate removal surgery.
