Don't Ignore Nighttime Bathroom Trips: It Could Be BPH
13 Sep
Summary
- Frequent nighttime urination can signal prostate issues like BPH.
- An enlarged prostate obstructs urine flow, stressing the bladder.
- Other urinary symptoms include weak stream and incomplete emptying.
As men age, an enlarged prostate, medically termed benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), can obstruct normal urination. This non-cancerous condition can lead to frequent nighttime urination, known as nocturia, which should not be normalized as an inevitable part of aging. Dr. Aditya K Sharma, a urologist at Max Super Speciality Hospital, Lucknow, notes that BPH causes the prostate to swell, partially blocking the urethra.
This blockage forces the bladder to work harder, potentially leading to increased urinary frequency and urgency. Men may wake multiple times nightly to urinate, even if they haven't consumed excess fluids. Other symptoms associated with prostate issues include a weaker urine stream, difficulty starting urination, dribbling, and a sensation of incomplete bladder emptying.
However, nocturia isn't solely indicative of an enlarged prostate. It can also stem from excessive evening fluid intake, caffeine, alcohol, overactive bladder, infections, diabetes, or certain medications. Sleep disturbances can also play a role, with individuals waking for other reasons and then using the bathroom.
Urologists advise monitoring symptom patterns, including frequency of waking, urine volume, stream changes, and daytime urgency. This information aids in diagnosing whether the issue involves the prostate, bladder, or another underlying condition. Evaluation may include urine and blood tests, ultrasounds, and flow assessments, with treatment tailored to the specific cause and symptom severity.
