Endometriosis-Ovarian Cancer Link Explored
8 May
Summary
- Researchers are studying endometriosis's influence on ovarian cancer development.
- The condition affects one in 10 women in the UK, with long diagnosis wait times.
- Endometriosis patients have a 2-4 times higher risk of developing ovarian cancer.

Scientists are investigating a significant connection between endometriosis and the development of ovarian cancer. This research, led by senior immunology lecturer Danielle Jex at the University of Northampton, explores whether chemical signals released by endometriosis cells can aid cancer cell survival and help them evade the immune system.
Endometriosis affects approximately one in 10 women in the UK, causing severe pain, heavy periods, and sometimes infertility. The average waiting time for a diagnosis has reached over nine years. While research indicates individuals with endometriosis are two to four times more likely to develop ovarian cancer, the overall risk remains low.
Using laboratory models and advanced bioprinting technology, researchers aim to replicate early disease stages. The goal is to determine if endometriosis signals can promote cancer cell growth and spread. Proving this link could pave the way for novel targeted treatments. Initial findings are expected later in 2026.
