UK Women Wait Decades for Endometriosis Diagnosis
13 Mar
Summary
- Women in the UK wait nearly 10 years for correct endometriosis diagnosis.
- Symptoms overlap with eight other conditions, complicating diagnosis.
- Early assessment is crucial for timely treatment and care.

Women in the UK are experiencing significant delays, waiting an average of nearly 10 years to receive a correct diagnosis for endometriosis. This condition, where womb-like cells grow outside the uterus causing inflammation and pain, affects over 1.5 million women and is the second most common gynecological issue.
Dr. Donald Grant, a GP, explained that endometriosis symptoms frequently mimic those of eight other health conditions. These include irritable bowel syndrome, pelvic inflammatory disease, polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), appendicitis, ovarian cysts, severe period pain, and painful bladder syndrome. The overlap in symptoms such as chronic pelvic pain, digestive discomfort, and painful periods complicates early identification.
Dr. Grant emphasized that while some menstrual discomfort is normal, persistent or severe symptoms warrant medical attention. Early assessment can facilitate the identification of underlying causes and open avenues for appropriate treatment. Recognizing when period pain significantly disrupts daily life, or is accompanied by other unusual symptoms, is vital for distinguishing endometriosis from more common ailments.
