New Drug Promises Unprecedented Weight Loss
21 May
Summary
- Retatrutide achieved average weight loss of 28.3%.
- High doses led to significant BMI reduction below obesity.
- Side effects include nausea, diarrhea, and constipation.

In a significant development for obesity treatment, Eli Lilly announced trial results for its new drug, retatrutide. Participants in a large-scale study achieved an average weight loss of 28.3% over 80 weeks, a figure substantially higher than observed with current market drugs.
The once-weekly injectable, a triple hormone receptor agonist, targets GLP-1, GIP, and glucagon. The highest dose, 12mg, resulted in an average weight loss of 70.3lbs, with many participants reducing their BMI below the clinical threshold for obesity.
Retatrutide's efficacy appears to surpass that of medications like Wegovy and Zepbound, which typically offer 15-20% weight loss. This advancement offers new hope for individuals struggling with obesity and related health issues.
However, the trial also documented side effects. Nausea, diarrhea, and constipation were reported more frequently in participants taking retatrutide compared to the placebo group. Vomiting and upper respiratory tract infections were also noted, increasing with higher doses.
