Paralysis Reversed: Electrician Walks Again After Spine Surgery
8 Mar
Summary
- Electrician regained mobility after complex cervical spine surgery.
- He fell 20 feet from a ladder, fracturing a vertebra.
- Early intervention and rehabilitation were crucial for recovery.

In a remarkable medical feat, a 24-year-old electrician has regained substantial functional mobility after a severe fall left him paralysed. The incident occurred in September when he fell nearly 20 feet from a ladder, sustaining a fractured vertebra that compressed his spinal cord. Arriving at the Government Institute of Medical Sciences (GIMS) in Greater Noida immediately after the accident, he experienced complete loss of movement in his limbs and symptoms of spinal shock.
Emergency trauma care protocols were initiated, with imaging confirming a C5 vertebral fracture. Doctors initially employed skeletal traction to alleviate pressure on the spinal cord. Following this, a complex anterior cervical spine surgery was performed. The procedure involved decompressing the spinal cord, bone grafting, and stabilizing the spine to address the critical injury.
Post-surgery, the patient underwent a rigorous rehabilitation program. Within three weeks, he could sit with support, and by the fourth week, he was able to stand with assistance. A six-month follow-up revealed significant functional recovery, underscoring the critical role of prompt medical intervention and dedicated rehabilitation in managing spinal cord injuries.
