One in Three Young Women Face Economic Abuse
8 Jul
Summary
- 36% of young women aged 16-24 experienced economic abuse.
- Half of victims reported negative mental health impacts.
- Abusers often prevent victims from working or studying.

Research indicates that one in three girls and young women, aged 16 to 24, suffered economic abuse from a current or former partner in the 12 months leading up to March. This form of abuse, characterized by controlling finances, restricting purchases, or incurring debt without consent, deeply affects victims' mental well-being. Half of those who experienced economic abuse reported negative impacts such as depression or panic attacks.
More than a quarter of young women subjected to economic abuse were prevented from working, studying, or training by their abuser. Alarmingly, nearly a third of teenage girls aged 16 to 18 reported similar experiences in the previous year, with abuse often starting very early in relationships. The charity advocates for increased awareness and early recognition of warning signs by parents and educators to prevent escalation.
