UK Approves Eco-Friendly Asthma Inhaler
21 Jul
Summary
- New asthma inhalers approved in UK use eco-friendly propellant.
- Inhalers reduce carbon footprint by up to 90%.
- Updated versions of Clenil Modulite to be released in 2026.

In a world first, the UK has approved new versions of Clenil Modulite inhalers for asthma patients, utilizing a novel, more environmentally friendly propellant. This significant advancement is set to reduce the carbon footprint associated with inhaler use by up to 90%.
The updated 100 microgram and 200 microgram Clenil Modulite inhalers will contain beclometasone dipropionate, a corticosteroid that effectively treats asthma by reducing airway inflammation. These new formulations, designated for release in the UK in 2026, maintain the same active ingredient, dosage, and therapeutic benefits as existing versions.
The Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) has granted this approval for pressurised metered-dose inhalers (pMDI) using the HFA-152a propellant. MHRA Executive Director Julian Beach highlighted the innovation's role in supporting both patient care and environmental sustainability. Patients can continue using current Clenil Modulite inhalers until the new versions become available.
