UNICEF, Gavi Seek Ebola Vaccine Plans Amid Outbreaks

UNICEF and Gavi have initiated a global request for information from vaccine developers and manufacturers concerning plans for a vaccine targeting the Bundibugyo strain of Ebola. This coordinated effort is bolstered by a commitment of up to $40 million from Gavi, aimed at accelerating access to potential vaccines through manufacturing scale-up and ensuring dose availability.

The call for details on timelines, production, and candidate suitability is crucial for prioritizing vaccine development alongside partners like the World Health Organization and CEPI. Currently, no approved vaccine exists for the Bundibugyo strain, which is implicated in ongoing outbreaks in the Democratic Republic of Congo and Uganda.

Several developers are leading vaccine efforts, including the International AIDS Vaccine Initiative, Oxford University, and Moderna. The International AIDS Vaccine Initiative anticipates transferring materials for human trials by the end of 2026. The urgency is underscored by over 1,000 cases and 250 deaths recorded so far. Gavi has allocated a total of $50 million from its First Response Fund to aid the outbreak response and speed up vaccine accessibility, recognizing vaccines as a vital tool for controlling infectious diseases.
