Ebola Spreads: 4th Province Hit in DRC

The Democratic Republic of Congo is grappling with an escalating Ebola outbreak, which has now spread to its fourth province. This expansion means the country's entire northeast, an area populated by approximately 15 million people, is now under threat. As of the latest reports, the epidemic has resulted in 360 fatalities among 1,274 confirmed cases.

The current outbreak, declared on May 15, is attributed to the Bundibugyo strain of the virus, a strain for which there is currently no vaccine or specific medical treatment. The World Health Organization has initiated an international alert, and clinical trials are slated to begin in the coming days.

Ituri province remains the epicenter, reporting 1,165 cases and 301 deaths. Previously, North Kivu and South Kivu were affected. The newly impacted province is Haut-Uele, which shares borders with South Sudan and the Central African Republic. Cases have also been reported across the border in Uganda, with 20 cases and 2 deaths.

Containing the virus is proving difficult due to factors such as cross-border movement in border regions like Ituri and Haut-Uele, as well as ongoing insecurity from armed groups. Weak healthcare systems, often lacking basic supplies, and overwhelmed treatment centers further complicate containment efforts. Medical staff have also been affected, with 78 infected and 18 deaths.

Experts anticipate the outbreak has not yet reached its peak and warn that the crisis could persist for up to a year. This current outbreak is distinct from the devastating 2018-2020 epidemic in the DRC, which saw nearly 2,300 deaths.
