WHO Hails Ebola Recovery Amidst DRC Outbreak
31 May
Summary
- Five patients recovered from a rare Ebola strain.
- The Bundibugyo strain has no approved vaccine or treatment.
- Outbreak spreads faster than any previous Ebola eruption.

The World Health Organization has reported positive news regarding the latest Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, announcing the recovery of five patients infected with a rare strain. This strain, identified as Bundibugyo, is particularly alarming due to the absence of any approved vaccine or specific treatment, and its tendency to kill up to 50 percent of those infected.
WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus shared that four patients were to be discharged soon, with one already having returned home. These announcements were made during the inauguration of a new Ebola treatment center in Bunia, the capital of Ituri province.
Medical charity Doctors Without Borders (MSF) has described the situation as "deeply alarming," noting that the outbreak has spread with unprecedented speed. MSF highlighted the difficulties in diagnosis stemming from limited testing capacity for this specific strain, a factor contributing to its rapid proliferation.
As of the latest official figures, the outbreak has resulted in over 220 suspected deaths and nearly 1,000 suspected cases within the DRC. Neighboring Uganda has also reported one death and nine cases, underscoring the cross-border implications of the epidemic.
