The Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) is intensifying efforts to bolster Ebola preparedness throughout the Americas. This initiative comes as a rare strain, Bundibugyo ebolavirus, has prompted the World Health Organization to declare a public health emergency of international concern. PAHO has activated its incident management system and is collaborating with national health ministries.
Key actions include strengthening surveillance, diagnostic capabilities, and infection control measures. PAHO is also preparing to ship necessary materials and reagents for molecular detection to countries with adequate biosafety infrastructure, based on risk assessments. This proactive stance aims to enable rapid detection and effective management of any potential importations.
As of June 4, the Democratic Republic of Congo reported 344 confirmed cases and 60 deaths, with 116 suspected cases under investigation across several provinces. Uganda has also reported 15 confirmed cases, including one fatality. PAHO stresses the importance of readiness to protect health workers and communities while avoiding travel or trade restrictions.
