Ebola Patient Flown Home from Nigeria to Switzerland
26 Oct
Summary
- Swiss woman evacuated from Nigeria for Ebola treatment.
- Nigeria reports no current Ebola cases after patient transfer.
- 52 contacts monitored as patient returns to Switzerland.

A Swiss national, who was being treated for Ebola in Nigeria, has been evacuated back to Switzerland for further care alongside her husband. Nigerian Health Minister Muhammad Pate confirmed the patient's departure, stating her condition had significantly improved, though she remained infectious. The husband, a Swiss diplomat, has shown no symptoms.
The World Health Organization's regional director for Africa, Mohamed Janabi, explained the evacuation was due to their Swiss citizenship. Local medical teams successfully managed the acute phase of her illness, stabilizing her condition before the transfer. Switzerland is now overseeing her treatment and monitoring her husband.
With the patient's evacuation, Nigeria has reported no active Ebola cases, according to Janabi. However, both Nigerian authorities and the WHO emphasize the need for continued caution and monitoring of the 52 identified contacts. The woman tested positive after returning to Abuja from Uganda, and investigations into the source of her infection are ongoing.
This incident occurs amidst broader concerns about Ebola outbreaks. The Africa Centers for Disease Control and Prevention noted that initial patients in Nigeria and Kenya had traveled through Uganda. Neighboring Congo continues to report a high number of cases and deaths from its ongoing outbreak, which the WHO has described as the fastest-spreading on record.
