Ebola Outbreak Outpacing Efforts, WHO Warns

A World Health Organization official expressed hope on Tuesday that the current Ebola outbreak, now the second most lethal in history, can be brought under control. The outbreak, however, is currently outpacing containment efforts and has expanded to a sixth province.
The global health agency had previously stated that reversing the spread of Ebola within a three-month period would be achievable. Despite this, recent signs indicate the outbreak has worsened significantly.
Resources for the response are lagging behind requirements, with the WHO having raised approximately 60% of the $115 million it is seeking. Nevertheless, containment efforts are being ramped up, and an additional 400 beds have been added in the past two weeks to manage the crisis.
The WHO's Emergency Committee is scheduled to convene on Tuesday to discuss the ongoing outbreak, which was declared a global health emergency by the U.N. agency on May 17.
