Ebola Cases Surge: Outbreak Threatens Record Scale
6 Jun
Summary
- Nearly 500 Ebola cases confirmed across DRC and Uganda.
- The World Health Organization declared an international emergency.
- A $518 million plan launched to combat the escalating outbreak.

The World Health Organization confirmed nearly 500 Ebola cases on Saturday, a stark increase amidst growing concerns about the epidemic's scale. The Democratic Republic of Congo has reported 452 confirmed cases, including 82 deaths, since the outbreak was declared three weeks prior. Uganda has also registered 19 confirmed cases with two fatalities.
The total of 471 cases and 84 deaths represents a substantial rise, prompting warnings that the outbreak could rival the 2014 West Africa epidemic. Experts noted that without robust interventions, the current situation risks becoming the largest on record. This rare Bundibugyo species of Ebola has no approved vaccines or treatments.
In response, the WHO and African CDC have initiated a $518-million plan over six months. This initiative prioritizes boosting surveillance, laboratory testing, and infection prevention. WHO chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus emphasized the need for swift, collective action to contain the outbreak and support affected nations, ensuring neighboring countries are prepared for early detection.
