Ebola Outbreak: Nations Race to Contain Rare Virus
28 May
Summary
- Rare Ebola strain causes 10 deaths and 220 suspected deaths in DRC.
- Uganda confirms five cases and one death from the virus.
- Several countries implement travel bans and border restrictions.

The Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) and Uganda are facing a severe outbreak of the rare Bundibugyo (BVD) strain of the Ebola virus. Since mid-May, the World Health Organization has recorded 10 confirmed deaths and 220 suspected fatalities in the DRC, with over 900 suspected cases. Uganda has confirmed five cases and one death. The WHO has elevated its risk assessment to very high nationally for the DRC.
In response to the escalating crisis, numerous countries have implemented stringent travel bans and temporary border measures. The DRC has suspended flights to and from Bunia, while Uganda has halted direct flights, bus, and boat crossings between the two nations for four weeks. Canada and the Bahamas have banned residents from the DRC, Uganda, and South Sudan for 90 and 30 days, respectively. The United States has also restricted entry for non-citizens and green card holders who have recently traveled from these affected countries, with specific airports designated for enhanced screening of returning US citizens.
The Bundibugyo strain is a highly fatal species causing severe viral hemorrhagic fever, spread through direct contact with bodily fluids or contaminated objects. While containment measures are in place, including contact tracing and treatment centers, the WHO notes the epidemic is outpacing detection efforts. The International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) advises that international flights remain safe and urges countries to focus on exit screening rather than entry bans.
