Congo funerals risk fueling Ebola outbreak

Critically, about two-thirds of these deaths occurred outside of clinics or hospitals. The viral disease, caused by the Bundibugyo strain, spreads through direct contact with bodily fluids and remains highly infectious even after death. Safe handling of deceased individuals and community engagement are vital for controlling the outbreak.
Officials noted that the movement of bodies across districts within Congo is a particular challenge, as families endeavor to conduct burials in their ancestral communities. While no cross-border movement of bodies has been reported, internal transport within the country is frequent. This practice risks introducing the virus into new areas if bodies are not managed with the utmost safety protocols.
