Summary
- Black women face lower AML diagnosis and survival rates.
- Character's storyline mirrors real-life struggles for diagnosis.
- EastEnders collaborates with charity to raise awareness.

A new storyline on EastEnders is raising awareness for acute myeloid leukemia (AML), a rare blood cancer, by featuring the character Denise Fox with the disease. This initiative is inspired by Mphango Simwaka, a young Londoner who faced significant challenges in receiving her AML diagnosis at age 24.
Simwaka emphasized the need for self-advocacy, particularly for black women within the NHS, recounting her difficult journey to obtain answers. Blood Cancer UK has partnered with the show's writers to accurately portray AML, a condition that is the third leading cause of cancer death in the UK and the fifth most common.
The collaboration aims to shed light on AML's signs and symptoms, such as persistent fatigue, unusual bleeding or bruising, and prolonged infections. It also highlights the intensive treatment process and its profound effect on patients and their loved ones.
Blood Cancer UK advises individuals to be aware of their bodies and seek second opinions if concerned. The charity and the NHS offer support to the approximately 3,000 people diagnosed with AML annually, stressing that no one facing this disease should feel alone.
