4 Apr
Summary
- Hazardous substances like urea and detergents detected in milk.
- 15 out of 705 milk samples were found to be adulterated.
- Raids intensified after 16 deaths from contaminated milk.

Hazardous substances including urea, maltodextrin, and detergents have been detected in milk during recent raids across East Godavari district. Animal Husbandry and Food Safety authorities collected 705 milk samples, finding 15 to be adulterated. One sample contained urea, eight had detergent, and two showed maltodextrin. Four other samples were of poor quality, suspected of adulteration.
Maltodextrin, derived from corn starch, can spike blood sugar and affect gut health. Urea is reportedly added by vendors to increase milk thickness and solids-not-fat content, posing risks such as digestive damage and renal failure. These inspections were intensified after 16 fatalities and four survivors from Ethylene Glycol-adulterated milk in Rajamahendravaram, beginning February 15th.
All 15 adulterated samples have been sent to the FSSAI Laboratory in Visakhapatnam for further testing. The ongoing intensified raids aim to secure the milk supply chain within East Godavari district.
