Early Miscarriage vs. Period: Know the Signs
17 Apr
Summary
- Early miscarriage symptoms often mimic a heavier, more painful period.
- Tissue-like discharge and larger clots can indicate an early miscarriage.
- A positive pregnancy test or medical check is the only way to confirm.

Distinguishing between an early miscarriage and a heavy period can be challenging, as symptoms often overlap. According to Dr. Pooja Chaudhary, consultant in Obstetrics and Gynaecology, an early miscarriage might manifest as more intense cramps, heavier bleeding, larger clots, or tissue-like discharge than a typical menstrual cycle. These indicators can make a woman's cycle feel significantly different.
The confusion is compounded because early miscarriages can easily be mistaken for an unusual period, especially before a pregnancy is confirmed. Many women may not realize they were pregnant, passing the experience off as a simply atypical cycle.
However, certain patterns can suggest a difference. Heavier bleeding, larger clots or tissue, and more persistent, stronger cramping than a usual period may point towards a miscarriage.
Given the symptom overlap, a pregnancy test or medical check-up is the only definitive way to know for sure. It is crucial to seek medical attention if experiencing very heavy bleeding (soaking a pad hourly), severe pain, fever, or dizziness. Consulting a doctor is also recommended if a pregnancy test was positive or if there is any uncertainty to rule out complications.
Further confirmation can be obtained through blood tests that track hCG levels, as falling levels can indicate a miscarriage. Ultrasound scans are also utilized to assess pregnancy development and identify signs of pregnancy loss, providing a clearer understanding of the situation.
