Silent Liver Disease: Doctors Urge Early Intervention
18 Apr
Summary
- Gastroenterologists emphasize early intervention for liver conditions.
- Alcohol, obesity, diabetes, and lifestyle factors contribute to liver issues.
- Teenagers are increasingly affected by fatty liver due to poor habits.

Gastroenterologists convened on World Liver Day, April 19, to stress the importance of early intervention for liver diseases. Experts noted that while liver transplant techniques have advanced, the often silent nature of the disease hinders timely treatment.
Dr. E. Kandaswamy highlighted that end-stage liver disease is a significant mortality cause. He emphasized that early action can prevent severe complications, reduce hospitalizations, and potentially avert the need for transplants. Key contributing factors include alcoholism, chronic obesity, diabetes, and autoimmune hepatitis.
Warning signs like jaundice, gastrointestinal bleeding, recurrent sepsis, and unexplained weight loss require immediate medical attention. Alarmingly, unhealthy diets and sedentary lifestyles are leading to fatty liver conditions even in teenagers, highlighting a growing public health concern that demands proactive management and screening.
