Flu Season Surges Early: Hospitals Overwhelmed

Flu season has commenced earlier than usual, with local health officials reporting a significant rise in hospital admissions, emergency room visits, and community outbreaks. Respiratory illnesses are rapidly increasing, driven primarily by influenza. Last week, 163 positive influenza tests were recorded, a stark contrast to only seven during the same period in the prior year. COVID-19 cases have seen a decrease, with only 15 positive tests last week.

Experts anticipate respiratory illness cases to peak earlier than typically seen, likely by late December. The dominant strain, Influenza A H3N2, differs slightly from the flu shot, yet vaccination remains crucial for reducing severe illness. The vaccine offers substantial protection against hospital visits for both children and adults and also covers other circulating strains like H1N1 and Influenza B.

In response to the surge, hospitals are reinforcing safety protocols. Effective December 15, all healthcare workers at LHSC facilities are required to wear masks during patient contact. While optional in non-clinical areas, patients and visitors are strongly encouraged to mask up, particularly if symptomatic or in high-risk clinical settings. Staying home when sick, frequent handwashing, and improving indoor ventilation are also recommended.
