E. coli bacteria have been identified in drinking water samples from various roadside eateries across Kochi during recent surprise checks. Five samples collected from establishments in Kaloor, Vyttila, and Thammanam tested positive, along with water from a borewell used at one eatery. These findings have prompted the Health department and Kochi Corporation to intensify their food safety drive.
Authorities are now planning to inspect units involved in bottling water, as the source of the bacterial contamination remains unclear. Health officials are also increasing awareness efforts, urging the public to consume only boiled water to prevent the spread of waterborne diseases. Inspections of food outlets will continue thrice weekly.
