E. coli Alert: Berries Hit With Top Risk Warning

A Class I risk warning, the FDA's highest alert level, has been issued for several GreenWise blueberry and mixed berry products sold at Publix due to possible E. coli O145 contamination. This classification indicates a reasonable probability of severe health consequences or death from exposure.
The recall, initiated on July 29, affects all lots of these products which were distributed to Publix stores across Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, and Virginia.
As of July 30, the FDA reported 12 illnesses and four hospitalizations in Florida and Georgia linked to the berries. The illnesses began between May 11 and June 5, with the investigation ongoing. Consumers are strongly advised not to consume the recalled berries and to return them to the place of purchase or discard them.
This recall occurs amidst broader concerns about foodborne illnesses. E. coli O145 is a Shiga toxin-producing strain that can cause severe gastrointestinal issues and, in critical cases, lead to hemolytic uremic syndrome, a condition that can result in kidney failure.
