Drones Slash TB Test Times: India's Health Leap
17 Jul
Summary
- Drone transport cut TB diagnosis time from 15 days to 5.
- Patient out-of-pocket expenses for diagnosis dropped significantly.
- Technology bridges geographical barriers for remote healthcare access.

A groundbreaking drone-assisted transport initiative by the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) has dramatically improved access to tuberculosis (TB) diagnostic services. Implemented in Telangana's Yadadri-Bhuvanagiri district, the i-DRONE program saw the median time for TB diagnosis decrease from 15 days to 5 days for individuals in remote areas. This intervention significantly reduces diagnostic delays, allowing for earlier disease confirmation and faster clinical decisions.
Beyond speed, the initiative has considerably lowered the financial burden on patients. The mean out-of-pocket expenditure for TB diagnosis fell from approximately ₹9,451 to about ₹91. This reduction is attributed to decreased travel costs and lost wages, with many patients incurring zero travel expenses during the drone phase. The hub-and-spoke network connected numerous health facilities closer to patients' homes.
Healthcare workers reported enhanced operational efficiency and positive community acceptance of the drone transport system. While weather and payload limitations present operational considerations, the i-DRONE initiative demonstrates technology's potential to overcome geographical challenges. Experts emphasize integrating drone technology with existing primary healthcare systems to strengthen diagnostics and referral pathways for effective TB elimination.
