Ebola Outbreak Spreads to Third Camp in DRC
22 Jun
Summary
- Ebola has infected over 1,000 people in the Democratic Republic of Congo.
- The outbreak has spread to a third displacement camp, raising concerns.
- Nearly a fifth of confirmed cases are children, according to UNICEF.
The Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo has surpassed 1,000 infections as it spreads to a third displacement camp. Official reports from late Sunday indicated 254 confirmed deaths, over a month after the outbreak of the rare Bundibugyo strain was declared. This strain currently has no approved treatment or vaccine, amplifying concerns.
The rapid spread across three eastern provinces has prompted health experts to warn that the current epidemic could rival the devastating West African outbreak from 2014-2016, which claimed over 11,000 lives. The vulnerability of children is particularly stark, with nearly a fifth of confirmed cases being minors, according to UNICEF. Fears are compounded by a lack of facilities to isolate patients effectively, making community transmission a significant risk.
The virus has reached displacement camps such as Hungbe and Kpangba, where residents have fled ongoing conflict. Bunia alone has seen at least 30 deaths in one displacement site. A recent case involved an 18-month-old girl in Hungbe who died after developing a fever and not being tested promptly, highlighting challenges in early detection and isolation. Uganda has also reported a smaller number of cases.
