Ebola Peak Declared in DRC Amidst Ongoing Concerns

The Democratic Republic of the Congo's health minister has announced that the Bundibugyo Ebola outbreak has reached its peak, with a noticeable decrease in the number of new infections. He stated that daily cases have fallen from around 120 to approximately 80, and several health zones have reported no new cases for extended periods. This progress is tempered by ongoing challenges, particularly in Ituri province where conflict complicates response efforts.

Despite the declaration, some officials urge caution against premature celebration, emphasizing the need for continued vigilance and transparency. Concerns have been raised about the data supporting the claim that the epidemic is under control, with calls for objective indicators to be made public. The outbreak, declared on May 15, marks the 17th Ebola outbreak in the DRC since 1976. Clinical trials for effective treatments are underway, and the country received over 70,000 doses of the Ervebo vaccine, though it is for a different Ebola virus variant.
