11 Jun
Summary
- Confirmed Ebola cases in DRC reached 635 as of June 9.
- Contact tracing has improved, with 61.1% of contacts now followed.
- Insecurity and poor health facilities hamper response efforts.

As of June 9, the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) has reported 635 confirmed cases of Ebola. Health Minister Roger Kamba stated that while the outbreak presents ongoing challenges, the response is accelerating, evidenced by increased patient recoveries and improved contact tracing. The proportion of contacts under follow-up rose to 61.1%.
Health authorities are maintaining high vigilance across all affected zones. Eight new recoveries were announced, bringing the total to 30, with a strong message urging early treatment. Significant resources, including 490 tonnes of medicines, have been deployed, and laboratories have been strengthened in Ituri, North Kivu, and South Kivu provinces.
However, the Africa Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC) has warned of significant operational constraints. These include poor conditions in health facilities, lack of essential supplies, insecurity, and staffing pressures. Community trust remains a critical challenge jeopardizing ongoing efforts. The Africa CDC is prioritizing community engagement, rapid response teams, and enhancing surveillance and contact follow-up.
