Mosley's Final Warning: Christmas is Peak Heart Attack Time
24 Dec
Summary
- Dr. Michael Mosley died aged 67 from natural causes in June 2024.
- He warned that Christmas Day sees more cardiac deaths than any other day.
- Overeating, cold weather, and flu increase heart attack risk at Christmas.

Eighteen months after his passing, the final warnings of Dr. Michael Mosley regarding the perils of the Christmas season are a poignant reminder. The acclaimed science journalist, who died of natural causes at age 67 in June 2024 on the Greek island of Symi, had previously highlighted a concerning trend: Christmas Day consistently records the highest number of cardiac deaths. This risk, he explained, is amplified by colder temperatures requiring the heart to work harder, alongside a greater likelihood of catching flu, both of which can lead to dangerous blood clots.
Dr. Mosley's research also pointed to the significant strain placed on the body by excessive feasting during the holidays. He noted that with an estimated 6,000 calories consumed on Christmas Day alone, the heart is put under considerable pressure. Furthermore, he expressed concern that mild heart attack symptoms, such as chest pain, could be easily mistaken for indigestion due to overeating, potentially delaying critical medical attention.
Motivated by his own father's struggles with type 2 diabetes and subsequent heart failure, Dr. Mosley had dedicated himself to improving his own health through diet, notably the 5:2 and blood sugar diets. Despite his efforts and a lower predicted heart attack risk than his father, he tragically passed away at 67, far from his family, on the island he loved, four days after he went missing.
