Dr. Jagdev Singh Guleria, a distinguished physician and cardiologist and former dean of the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), New Delhi, died at his home in Delhi on January 22 at the age of 98. He was widely remembered by colleagues and students as a mentor, teacher, and model of clinical excellence.
Dr. Guleria's legacy is one of clinical brilliance and dedicated mentorship. He was known for his remarkable diagnostic precision; colleagues recall him accurately diagnosing patients after hearing only half their symptoms. His journey began in a small village in Himachal Pradesh, and despite holding a permanent civil medical services job, he resigned to join the nascent AIIMS in 1958.
He was among the first DM cardiology students at AIIMS, undergoing training at Safdarjung Hospital. Dr. Guleria admitted AIIMS's first patient in December 1958 and later became head of the Department of Medicine and dean. Even without advanced imaging in the 1970s, his diagnostic acumen through clinical examination was unparalleled.
After retiring from AIIMS in 1987, Dr. Guleria played a key role in establishing the Department of Medicine at the University College of Medical Sciences (UCMS) and later practiced at Sitaram Bhartia Institute of Science and Research for over 30 years, continuing to serve patients into his late nineties.
