Dog Food Recall: Blindness Fears Grow
22 Aug
Summary
- Dog food recall follows reports of sudden bilateral dry eye.
- Buckwheat contamination is the suspected cause for the eye condition.
- Affected dogs face potential sight loss and costly treatments.

A voluntary recall of all fresh meals by the dog food brand Years has raised concerns among pet owners regarding a potential link to a serious eye condition. Owners have reported their dogs developing sudden bilateral dry eye, also known as keratoconjunctivitis sicca (KCS), which causes severe soreness and can lead to sight loss if untreated.
The company initiated the recall after receiving numerous reports beginning late last month. Their investigation is currently focused on potential contamination within a portion of the buckwheat supply, a relatively new ingredient in their recipes. Independent laboratory testing is underway to establish a definitive cause.
Owners have shared distressing accounts of their pets' suffering, including significant veterinary costs and emotional strain. For instance, Chester, a six-year-old cavachon, experienced persistent eye issues for months before the recall, with vets suspecting a link to the food. Similarly, Phoebe, a seven-year-old spaniel, was diagnosed with dry eye in August 2026, coinciding with the introduction of buckwheat.
Lettuce, an eight-year-old greyhound, was diagnosed with dry eye and ulcers in March 2026, leading to specialist treatment and thousands in costs. Owners are anxiously awaiting the investigation's findings, seeking clarity on the cause and reassurance about their pets' long-term health and vision.
