Your Dog's Sleep Habits Might Be Ruining Yours
11 Sep
Summary
- Co-sleeping with dogs negatively impacts sleep quality.
- Most pet owners are unaware of pets' effect on sleep.
- Pets can disrupt sleep through noise, heat, or movement.

New research published in Scientific Reports indicates that sleeping in the same room as pets can lead to poorer sleep quality and more insomnia symptoms. The study, which analyzed over 1,500 American adults, found a negative effect specifically when co-sleeping with dogs, but no such impact was observed with cats.
Surprisingly, 93% of participants who co-slept with their pets felt their animals had a positive or neutral effect on their sleep, suggesting a widespread unawareness of the potential negative consequences. While pets offer numerous daytime benefits, including companionship and encouraging routine, their presence at night can be a source of noise, heat, or movement that disrupts sleep.
Although this survey-based study cannot definitively prove causation, it raises concerns that nighttime sleep disturbances might undermine the well-documented mental health benefits of pet ownership. Experts suggest practical steps for owners who share their sleeping space with pets, such as ensuring adequate mattress space and maintaining consistent bedtime routines.
