Doctors Oppose 'Happiness Center' Rebranding for Psychiatric Care

These professional bodies argue that rebranding specialist medical institutions aims to reduce stigma but instead undermines the scientific and medical foundation of psychiatric care. They emphasize that these centers provide critical, guideline-based treatment for severe mental disorders and serve as vital training and research hubs.
The IMA proposed an alternative name, 'Regional Institute of Psychiatry and Behavioural Sciences,' which retains 'psychiatry' as the primary specialty while acknowledging broader behavioral sciences. This approach, they contend, more accurately reflects the comprehensive nature of psychiatric treatment, which extends beyond simple counseling.
Both IPS and IMA highlight that renaming these institutions will not address the root causes of stigma, which require sustained educational and community initiatives. They stress the importance of maintaining accurate institutional identities that reflect their specialty and academic purpose within the healthcare system. DNB Psychiatry trainees also voiced concerns, fearing the dilution of clinical identity and credibility in academic and medical communities.
