Gym Return Sparks Kidney Crisis: Doctor's Warning
12 Mar
Summary
- Sudden intense exercise after a long break caused muscle breakdown.
- Damaged muscle cells release myoglobin toxic to kidney tubules.
- Excessive protein supplements can stress kidneys, especially combined with heavy workouts.

A Mumbai doctor experienced a severe medical emergency after resuming gym activities following a seven-month hiatus. Initially engaging in intense weightlifting, he developed extreme muscle pain and noticed cola-colored urine, indicative of rhabdomyolysis, a rapid muscle breakdown condition.
This incident occurred around World Kidney Day, highlighting the dangers of sudden strenuous workouts. Damaged muscle cells release myoglobin, which can be toxic to kidney tubules and temporarily impair kidney function. Doctors note an increase in such cases, even among young, otherwise healthy individuals.
Nephrologists are also concerned about the widespread use of protein powders. Excessive supplement intake, especially when combined with heavy exercise without medical guidance, can place undue stress on the kidneys, forcing them to work harder to filter waste products.
With around 4,000 patients in Mumbai registered for kidney transplants, prevention and early care are paramount. Health experts stress the importance of gradual fitness building and awareness about conditions like rhabdomyolysis that can cause sudden kidney injury.
