Doctor's Fatigue Mystery Solved by Testosterone
17 Feb
Summary
- A GP experienced severe fatigue, anxiety, and brain fog.
- Testicular cancer and meningitis preceded his hormonal struggles.
- Testosterone replacement therapy revitalized his health and mind.

A 39-year-old GP from Newcastle, specializing in men's hormones, endured debilitating fatigue, anxiety, and brain fog for over two years. Initially dismissing these symptoms as burnout from illness and family stress, he was unaware of a potential hormonal imbalance. His health journey included a testicular cancer diagnosis in 2016, resulting in the removal of one testicle, and later, viral meningitis.
Despite recovering from meningitis, persistent fatigue led to severe anxiety and depression, prompting antidepressant prescriptions. It wasn't until a nurse suggested testing his testosterone levels that the true cause was identified. In 2021, he began testosterone replacement therapy (TRT) under an endocrinologist's care.
TRT proved transformative, reversing his symptoms and significantly improving his quality of life. This experience highlighted for him the critical role of testosterone in men's overall health, including mental well-being, bone and muscle mass, and energy levels. He notes that symptoms of testosterone deficiency are often vague and misdiagnosed.
Many men wait extended periods before seeking help for low testosterone, with surveys indicating that 85% wait at least a year. While the exact cause of his deficiency remains unclear, Dr. Draper suggests his history of testicular cancer and subsequent surgery may have contributed. The NHS advises men experiencing similar symptoms to consult a GP for testosterone level testing.
