Doctor Suspended Amidst Body Swap Scandal
2 Apr
Summary
- Civil surgeon suspended pending inquiry over body swap.
- Two hospital staffers suspended after body mix-up discovery.
- Hospital faces inquiry over alleged newborn starvation.

Satara Civil Surgeon Dr. Yuvraj Karpe was suspended on Wednesday, pending departmental inquiry, due to alleged dereliction of duty. This action follows a severe negligence case at the district civil hospital involving the swapping of two bodies.
The mix-up occurred when the body of a 26-year-old accident victim was mistakenly given to the relatives of a 51-year-old deceased patient. The error was discovered mid-cremation, leading to its halt. Two staffers from the hospital's postmortem department were suspended.
This body-swap incident is not the first for Satara Civil Hospital, with a similar case reported weeks prior. However, this recent event resulted in the partial cremation and desecration of one body.
Additionally, the hospital, under Karpe's leadership, is facing a Bombay High Court-assigned inquiry. This inquiry concerns allegations that a newborn was deliberately starved to death for DNA sampling after a medical termination of pregnancy for a rape survivor. The principal secretary is to submit the inquiry report to the High Court on April 2.
