A resident doctor at GMCH Nagpur, Ritwik Sagar Thakur, 26, has died by suicide, an autopsy confirmed on February 4, 2026. His death, discovered in a city hotel room, has been ruled out as foul play. Doctors clarified that blood stains found on his hands were from a nosebleed following asphyxiation, not external injuries.
Thakur had joined his postgraduate residency just six days prior to his death. While doctors noted he was experiencing mental stress, no specific reason or trigger has been identified. Central MARD general secretary Dr. Suyash Dhavane stated that their inquiry found no campus-related trigger, and Thakur appeared happy about his ophthalmology seat.
GMCH dean Dr. Raj Gajbhiye emphasized the institute's commitment to mental health, mentioning a dedicated counselling cell. This incident follows two other student suicides at AIIMS Nagpur last year, intensifying concerns over the mental health burden on medical professionals.
