New DNA Blood Test Guides Throat Cancer Treatment
6 Apr
Summary
- DNA blood tests show promise in guiding throat cancer treatment.
- Tests help doctors tailor therapy to reduce patient side effects.
- This approach aids in determining recurrence risk post-surgery.
A novel trial involving 104 patients suggests that DNA blood tests can significantly enhance treatment decisions for throat cancer, particularly HPV-linked types. These tests measure circulating tumor DNA (ctDNA) and are conducted both before and after surgical tumor removal.
More than 22,000 Americans are diagnosed with throat cancer annually, with HPV causing about 90% of these cases. Current treatments like radiation and chemotherapy can cause long-term side effects. This study, published on April 2, 2026, in JAMA Otolaryngology - Head and Neck Surgery, aims to mitigate such impacts.
Results from the ctDNA tests, analyzed alongside other risk factors, help physicians gauge the likelihood of tumor recurrence. While a positive postoperative ctDNA result may indicate higher risk, a negative result does not guarantee clearance. Further research is planned to improve test sensitivity and integration with other risk factors.
