Diwali Sweets Under Fire: Quality Checks Seal Namkeen Outlet
26 Oct
Summary
- Food department seized 29 samples of sweets and snacks for testing.
- A prominent namkeen outlet was sealed for improper used cooking oil disposal.
- Health risks linked to reused cooking oil include high blood pressure and liver disease.

The Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation's Food Department has initiated extensive quality checks on traditional food items prior to Diwali. Authorities collected 29 samples of various sweets and snacks, including kaju anjeer roll, barfi, and rasgulla, for analysis at the Public Health Laboratory. A notable event was the sealing of Jain Super Namkeen in Naroda for failing to maintain proper systems for storing and disposing of used cooking oil.
Officials highlighted the dangers associated with reused cooking oil, noting that Total Polar Compounds (TPCs) above 25% render oil unfit for consumption. High TPC levels are linked to serious health issues such as atherosclerosis, high blood pressure, and liver disease. Food businesses exceeding 50 kg of daily oil consumption are mandated by AMC regulations to keep detailed records of oil usage and disposal, with used oil requiring proper containment and handover to authorized agencies.
