A festive Diwali celebration last year transformed into a painful ordeal for 14-year-old Arjun when a firecracker exploded in his hand. The incident resulted in severe damage to his right hand, limiting his thumb's mobility and his ability to grip objects, alongside burns to his chest and neck. Following nearly a month of treatment and three months of rehabilitation, he gradually regained the ability to write.
Arjun's case is representative of hundreds of injuries reported annually during festive seasons, with over 250 patients seeking treatment for injuries from firecrackers, diyas, candles, and decorative lights. Doctors from KGMU's plastic surgery department emphasize that firecracker injuries frequently lead to permanent disabilities, even after reconstructive surgeries and skin grafting.
Accidents often occur when individuals hold fireworks like sutli bombs, rockets, and anars, underestimating the fuse's burn time. Specialists advise that most such injuries can be prevented by igniting fireworks on the ground and moving away promptly. Rockets and anars are also significant causes of facial burn injuries.
