Dishwasher Detergents Linked to Gut Health Concerns, Warn TikTok Influencers
11 Sep
Summary
- TikTok influencers claim dishwasher detergents and rinse aids can damage gut lining
- 2023 study suggests chemicals in rinse aid may cause "leaks" in gut, leading to health issues
- Experts advise using gentler products or rinsing dishes again to minimize risks

As of September 11th, 2025, a growing number of TikTok influencers are raising concerns about the potential health risks associated with dishwasher detergents and rinse aids. According to their claims, the residue left on dishes from these products could be damaging the body's protective gut lining and leading to a range of issues, including inflammation, food intolerances, and even autoimmune conditions.
The alarm was sparked by a 2023 study published in the Journal of Allergy and Clinical Immunology, which suggested that the alcohol ethoxylates found in dishwasher rinse aids can be toxic to human gut cells. The study's lead researcher, Professor Cezmi Akdis of the University of Zurich, argues that these chemicals can cause tiny gaps in the gut lining, allowing toxins and bacteria to "leak" into the bloodstream.
While the risks appear to be higher for commercial dishwashers that use more concentrated chemicals and faster cycles, experts say that even household dishwashers can leave behind residue that could be problematic. They recommend using gentler products, rinsing dishes again with water, or substituting vinegar for rinse aid to minimize the potential for harm.
Despite the concerns raised by TikTok influencers, some experts caution that the evidence is not yet conclusive. A 2021 study, for example, found that the plastic-like film from dishwasher pods is unlikely to leave harmful residues on plates. Additionally, while dishwashers can release microplastics into wastewater, the total amount is considered relatively minor compared to other sources.
