Diet Soda Linked to Faster Brain Aging
24 Jul
Summary
- Study links artificial sweeteners to faster cognitive decline.
- Younger adults under 60 showed stronger negative effects.
- Researchers can't definitively prove sweeteners caused declines.

A recent study published in September 2025 indicates that artificial sweeteners found in diet sodas and other products may be associated with a faster decline in memory and cognitive skills. Researchers observed over 12,000 adults for eight years and found that those with the highest intake of sweeteners experienced a 62% faster rate of cognitive decline, equivalent to approximately 1.5 years of brain aging.
The link was particularly strong in participants younger than 60, suggesting midlife may be a critical period for dietary impacts on brain aging. However, the study was observational, meaning it cannot definitively prove that sweeteners cause these cognitive changes. Experts note that further research is needed to confirm these findings and explore potential mechanisms, such as neuroinflammation or gut microbiota disruption.
While the findings raise concerns, experts advise moderation rather than outright elimination of diet products. One diet soda per day is not considered a cause for panic, but the study encourages individuals to consider their overall intake of artificial sweeteners. For individuals with diabetes, reducing overall sweetness and personalizing sweetener choices is recommended.
