Guilt-Free Diet Breaks for Fat Loss
28 Aug
Summary
- Planned diet breaks showed similar fat loss to continuous restriction.
- Diet breaks may help preserve lean body mass, though more research is needed.
- Reduced energy expenditure and increased hunger are challenges of dieting.

A 2026 study published in Nutrients indicates that temporarily pausing calorie restriction may not impede fat loss. Researchers observed that women with obesity who incorporated planned diet breaks and refeeds lost a statistically similar amount of fat compared to those adhering to continuous calorie restriction.
This approach may help mitigate adaptive thermogenesis, a reduction in energy expenditure that can make dieting more difficult over time. Prolonged calorie deficits can also lead to decreased satiety and increased hunger, creating conditions favorable for weight regain. Diet breaks, when structured, appear to offer similar body composition changes without compromising fat loss.
Earlier research, such as the MATADOR trial, also suggests that alternating calorie restriction with maintenance periods may reduce compensatory metabolic responses and enhance overall weight and fat loss. While the recent trial showed a nonsignificant trend favoring the diet-break group for preserving fat-free mass, further research is required to confirm this benefit.
