Dhanbad Hospital Blood Bank Runs Dry
13 Mar
Summary
- Lone government hospital in Dhanbad faces severe blood shortage.
- Current blood stock is 35-42 units against daily need of 40.
- Thalassemia patients face critical treatment delays due to low supply.

The Shaheed Nirmal Mahto Medical College and Hospital (SNNMCH) in Dhanbad, a vital healthcare provider for multiple districts, is experiencing a critical blood shortage. The hospital's blood bank, designed to hold approximately 900 units, currently has only 35 to 42 units. This deficit is significantly impeding patient care, particularly for the 250 registered thalassemia patients who depend on regular blood transfusions.
Dr. B.K. Pandey, the Superintendent of the SNNMCH Blood Bank, highlighted the dire situation, stating that recent blood donations have been insufficient to meet the average daily consumption of 40 units. The available stock is prioritized for emergencies and surgeries, leaving insufficient supply for other patients. Appeals have been made to voluntary donors, social organizations, and youth groups to contribute blood.
Efforts are underway to alleviate the crisis, including an upcoming blood donation camp organized by a bone marrow transplant awareness group. Dr. Suman, Senior Manager at SNNMCH, acknowledged the difficulty and emphasized the hospital's ongoing collaboration with social organizations to encourage more donation drives. Relatives of patients have reported prolonged waits for blood, underscoring the urgent need for community support.
