A pioneering maternal health initiative in Detroit, Rx Kids, is showing promising results. Nearly 3,000 families are currently enrolled in the program, which provides $1,500 per month to pregnant women and $500 per month for six to 12 months after birth. Initial data from Flint, where the program originated, indicates an 18 percent reduction in preterm births and a 27 percent decrease in low birth weights, alongside fewer NICU admissions. These findings, published in Lancet Public Health, suggest the Rx Kids model is replicable and expected to yield similar positive outcomes in Detroit.

Beyond its impact on infant health, Rx Kids serves as a significant economic stimulus. Beneficiary families spend the provided funds on essential goods and services, such as groceries, diapers, and rent, circulating money within the local economy.
