Ignoring Tooth Pain? It Could Signal Serious Health Risks
5 Sep
Summary
- Untreated tooth decay can lead to infections spreading to bone.
- Bleeding gums may indicate gingivitis or more severe gum disease.
- Mouth sores lasting over two weeks could signal underlying issues.

Tooth pain, even if intermittent, signals a problem that requires attention. Ignoring it can allow decay to advance, potentially leading to infections that spread to the jawbone. Such infections can elevate the risk of serious systemic conditions like Type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease. A simple cavity costing a few hundred dollars to fill can escalate to a root canal, costing $1,000 or more, if an infection develops.
Swollen or bleeding gums, often a sign of gingivitis, also warrant a dental visit. If left untreated, gum disease can become severe, leading to bone loss around the teeth and potentially contributing to cardiovascular and neurodegenerative disorders. Persistent bleeding gums can also be linked to diabetes or, rarely, blood disorders or cancer.
Other concerning symptoms include loose teeth, which can indicate advanced gum disease or, in rare instances, tumors. Persistent bad breath or a metallic taste may signal infection or dry mouth, which itself can be linked to autoimmune diseases or diabetes. Mouth sores that don't heal within two weeks, or persistent lumps, require immediate medical attention as they can be early signs of oral cancer or autoimmune conditions.
