Dementia Risk Predicted Years Early by BP Readings
27 Mar
Summary
- Routine blood pressure checks may predict dementia years before symptoms.
- Vascular aging metrics offer insights into future cognitive health.
- Better hypertension management could protect both heart and brain.

New research indicates that simple measurements during routine blood pressure checks could identify dementia risk years in advance of symptom onset. Studies presented at the American College of Cardiology's Annual Scientific Session suggest that tracking how blood vessels age and stiffen over time offers a window into future cognitive health.
These findings stem from research involving over 8,500 adults with hypertension. Scientists found that metrics like the pulse pressure-heart rate index and estimated pulse wave velocity, calculable from standard doctor's visit data, are strong predictors of dementia risk. Elevated or increasing pulse wave velocity correlated with a higher likelihood of developing dementia.
