Lifestyle Choices Key to Beating Dementia
1 Feb
Summary
- Seventeen factors influence Alzheimer's and vascular dementia.
- Forty-five percent of dementia cases stem from modifiable risks.
- Vascular health, diet, and smoking are key dementia influences.

New research has pinpointed 17 factors that significantly influence the development of Alzheimer's disease and vascular dementia, two of the most common forms of the condition.
These factors include both unchangeable elements like age and genetics, and crucially, those that individuals can modify, such as diet, alcohol consumption, and smoking habits. It is estimated that 45 percent of all dementia cases can be attributed to these controllable risk factors.
The study, conducted at Lund University in Sweden, examined 494 participants, analyzing the impact of these factors on key brain proteins linked to cognitive decline: white matter hyperintensities, amyloid-beta, and tau.
