Dementia Diagnosis Delays Plague UK Care System
2 Sep
Summary
- Nearly half of dementia carers waited over six months for diagnosis.
- Celebrities urge government for faster dementia diagnosis and care.
- Government commits to improving dementia support and carer recognition.

Campaigners, including actor Sir Jonathan Pryce and broadcaster Jon Snow, have written to the government calling for a dementia diagnosis within 18 weeks of referral. This plea comes as a survey reveals almost half of dementia carers experienced waits of over six months for a diagnosis after seeking initial help.
The extended waits significantly affect families, with many reporting difficulties in planning for the future and feeling their lives are on hold. The Alzheimer's Society highlighted that delayed diagnoses leave families in uncertainty, hindering their ability to prepare and access vital support.
In response, the Department of Health and Social Care stated its commitment to enhancing support for dementia patients and their caregivers. Plans include accelerating social care reform and appointing a dementia tsar to spearhead efforts. A new action plan for unpaid carers is also being implemented to provide them with deserved support and recognition.
